Unfounded accusations made by the European Union (EU) against Azerbaijan cast a shadow on the prospect of signing a peace treaty with Armenia, Director of the Report News Agency Fuad Huseynaliyev said in an interview with ARB 24 TV channel.
He recalled that Brussels proposed to locate its observation mission not only in Armenia, but also in Azerbaijan.
"However, official Baku did not agree to this because placing this mission in our country would mean prolonging the problem for several years. Therefore, they were forced to be content with placing the mission in Armenia. After this, the main goal changed - the European Union already began to take steps to oust Russia from Armenia. This is confirmed by statements made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his entourage. The activeness of Germany, in addition to France, has recently become noticeable in Armenia. It seems that Berlin will not allow Paris to play a leading role in the region," Report's chief said.
He added that, nevertheless, no active struggle should be expected between them.
"Berlin was previously involved more in economic issues and Paris was engaged more in politics. However, Germany, apparently, is not averse to being more actively involved in political issues against the backdrop of France's weakening position in this area."
But neither Germany nor other states can put pressure on Azerbaijan, not to mention the fact that, unlike France, Germany does not show bias and does not take a unilateral position.
According to Huseynaliyev, Europe's one-sided position makes the Brussels format of peace negotiations not so effective - "we are all witnesses of support for Armenia and statements in favor of this country."
"Azerbaijan wants to sign a peace treaty on terms based on international law and establish a stable peace in the South Caucasus. However, the unfounded accusations brought by the EU against Azerbaijan cast a shadow on the prospect of signing a peace treaty," Huseynaliyev said.
