EU urges Baku to sign peace treaty with Yerevan ahead of COP29

The EU calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to sign a peace treaty with Armenia ahead of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku in November, Report informs referring to EUobserver citing the European Commission (EC).

“It is time to take decisive steps towards a sustainable and lasting peace. Azerbaijan should seize the momentum of COP29 to sign peace with Armenia,” a commission spokesperson recently told EUobserver.

However, according to Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada, there are still major obstacles to signing a peace treaty any time soon and the position of the EU as an honest broker has been undermined.

"The prerequisite for the signing of a genuine and enduring peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia is the necessity of cessation of Armenia’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan," Hajizada said.
