Elchin Amirbayov: Peace is close, but Armenia must be sincerely committed to results

At this decisive stage of the peace process, when the parties are not that much far away from the final peace agreement, Yerevan’s sincere commitment to achieving concrete results is necessary, Elchin Amirbayov, the special ambassador to the Azerbaijani President, said in an interview with The Guardian.

According to Report, Amirbayov noted that having handed over the latest version of the text of the peace agreement to the Armenian side last week, Baku is now waiting for Yerevan's response to its proposals.

He said Armenia must fully realize all the benefits of peace with Azerbaijan for itself and abandon all harmful illusions and machinations aimed at disrupting the peace process and returning to military confrontation with Azerbaijan.

Outlining the five key principles that formed the basis of the draft peace treaty developed by Baku, Amirbayov noted that the issue of defining the border could be resolved at a later stage, given its complex and time-consuming nature.

Asked about the mechanism for resolving disputes between the parties after the peace treaty is signed, Elchin Amirbayov emphasized that Azerbaijan's preference in this issue would be the idea of establishing a bilateral Armenian-Azerbaijani commission, without any unnecessary outside interference.

As for ensuring transport links between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, Baku considers this issue not only in terms of creating the Middle Corridor, the transport corridor that would link China to Europe, but also as an important element of ensuring its national security.

Amirbayov emphasized that in this sense as events 'on the ground' show, after three years of waiting futilely for a clear answer from Armenia, Baku does not intend to waste any more time. While Armenia is unable to understand its benefit in the creation of the Zangazur corridor, it still continues to spread the absurd narrative about the impending Azerbaijani aggression against it and intends to continue to remain a regional dead end, Azerbaijan has moved on to concrete actions and has begun the implementation of the so-called 'Plan B', giving preference to the creation of the above-mentioned transport links through the territory of neighboring Iran.
