Azerbaijan's envoy in US: 907th amendment hinders development of relations between Baku and Washington

Azerbaijan hopes for the US to repeal the 907th amendment, which hinders the development of bilateral relations.

As Report informs, Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Washington Khazar Ibrahim said this in an interview with the American publication Diplomatic Watch.

According to the diplomat, the 907th amendment was unfairly adopted against Azerbaijan - many Americans also acknowledge this - during the period when Azerbaijani territories were under occupation, and ethnic cleansing (against Azerbaijanis) was taking place in the region: "This (adoption of such an amendment) became possible as a result of pressure from certain lobbying groups in Congress."

Khazar Ibrahim emphasized that there are very strong ties between the US and Azerbaijan: "Given Azerbaijan's strategic position, our relations with the US will continue to develop. Azerbaijan plays a role in almost every critical issue that matters to the US. And for Azerbaijan, the US is important not only because it is a global superpower, but also because we have many common interests and values," he noted.

The ambassador believes that relations between Baku and Washington will continue to grow, but hopefully without the 907th amendment.
