Azerbaijan participates in international glacier protection conference in Dushanbe

An Azerbaijani delegation is participating in the first high-level International Conference on Glacier Protection held in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan.

Report informs, citing the Cabinet of Ministers, that the delegation is headed by Azerbaijan's Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov and includes representatives from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event is attended by representatives from 41 countries and 57 international organizations.

Speaking at the plenary session of the conference, Sharifov emphasized that glacier protection holds not only regional but also global significance. He noted that the rapid melting of glaciers poses a serious threat to daily life, public health, water and food security, and the resilience of ecosystems, and negatively impacts the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Deputy Prime Minister underlined that Azerbaijan, as a country with glacial reserves, is particularly sensitive to this issue.

During the conference, Sharifov met with the Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Kohir Rasulzoda, and held a series of meetings to discuss climate change mitigation strategies and other issues of mutual interest.
