Artificial intelligence (AI) should not be viewed as a threat to the journalism profession — with a thoughtful and responsible approach, it can become a powerful tool for newsrooms, Aina Zhadabek, Chair of the Board of the Kazakh media company Qazcontent, said on the sidelines of the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum.
According to Report, commenting on discussions about AI at the forum, she noted that concerns about its impact on journalism are global.
“Listening to speakers from leading international media outlets, I was quite surprised. I used to think that the challenges related to AI were relevant only to us in Kazakhstan or to regional media. But it became clear: this is a worldwide issue,” said Zhadabek.
According to her, the key concern within the professional community today is whether journalism will lose its uniqueness and relevance.
“I believe we will not lose the journalism profession if we use AI wisely and consciously. Some say AI is a threat, but I think it’s primarily an opportunity,” she emphasized.
The Qazcontent chair noted that in order for technology to be beneficial, it must not be feared, but rather explored, tested, and implemented.
“If we continue to ignore AI, avoid learning about it, and remain afraid of it — then it truly will become a threat. But if we take it step by step, stay up to date with trends, and grow alongside technology, journalism will only benefit. The AI world is evolving rapidly, and we must not fall behind,” Zhadabek concluded.
