Avenging the devastating defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the 2020 final of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Neymar and Kylian Mbappe-starrer Paris Saint Germain (PSG) battled past the Bundesliga giants in the quarter-finals 1st leg of Europe's biggest club competition on Wednesday.
Report informs that PSG star striker Mbappe not only powered PSG to a crucial win in the 1st leg, but the Frenchman also scripted history by overshadowing Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and setting up a unique record that has been untouched by the two goal-scoring behemoths.
The Robert Lewandowski-less Bayern had their task cut out when they hosted a ruthless and vindictive PSG side in their 1st leg of the quarter-final tie at the famous Allianz Arena. Inside the first three minutes, Mbappe made his presence felt in Munich by drawing first blood. Assisted by Neymar, the PSG striker got the better of legendary German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give the visitors an early lead in the 1st half.
Mbappe had netted a stunning hat-trick against Barcelona at Camp Nou, which triggered a premature exit for Lionel Messi and Co. from the 2020-21 season of the Champions League competition. The French then registered a crucial brace against Bayern to take his away goal tally to five in the knockout stage.
However, Mbappe is still two goals behind the current season's Champions League top-scorer Erling Haaland (10). Former AS Monaco striker Mbappe has netted eight goals in 8 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants. Interestingly, Mbappe also has the joint-most tally of 8 goals scored by a French player in a single Champions League season.
