TAP AG to cut pipeline emissions by 5% by 2026

TAP AG pipeline company plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) by 5% by the end of 2025, Report informs referring to the company.

"As part of our commitment to decarbonisation, we are dedicated to ensuring that our own operations become climate neutral by 2050. Our focus is on prioritising initiatives that have the highest impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions both in the short, medium and long term, while also enhancing energy efficiency measures.

Our 2022-2025 Carbon Management Plan sets short-term targets until the end of the current year, aiming to reduce TAP’s GHG emissions by 5% and methane emissions by 8% compared to our forecast, and the fugitive emissions by 54% versus the 2021 leak detection and repair campaign. We are well on track to meet these targets. In 2024, we achieved an overall reduction of approximately 20% in our greenhouse gas emissions and about 58% in methane emissions compared to the annual forecast.

Based on studies conducted, over 90% of TAP’s CO₂ emissions emanate from the operation of our gas-powered compressors. In this context, as mentioned earlier, we are considering the installation of new electro-compressors both in our existing and new stations in the event of future expansion," the company said.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline, the final component of the Southern Gas Corridor designed to transport Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe, was put into commercial operation on November 15, 2020. The 878 km long gas pipeline runs through Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea and Italy. Azerbaijan began exporting gas to Europe on December 31, 2020.

According to the agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU, Azerbaijani gas supplies should reach at least 16 billion cubic meters per year by 2027. As part of the first stage of the gas pipeline expansion, Italy will receive 1 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas, and Albania will receive 200 million cubic meters. So far, 45.6 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan have been supplied to Europe via TAP.
