SOCAR's inactive wells may be used for carbon storage

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has numerous depleted and inactive oil and gas wells that could potentially be used for future carbon storage projects, SOCAR's wind and solar energy expert Elchin Targuliyev said on the second day of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025), Report informs.
"These wells are no longer used for extraction," he said. "They could serve as carbon storage for various companies, both in Azerbaijan and abroad. However, all of this is still in the research phase."
