Expert: Gas field discovered by Türkiye can meet gas demand for 30 years

Türkiye's newly discovered gas field in the Black Sea can ensure the country's domestic natural gas consumption for about 30 years, Oktay Tanrisever, Chairperson of the Energy Diplomacy Working Group at the World Energy Council Turkish National Committee (WECTNC), professor of the Middle East Technical University of Türkiye, told Report.

According to him, Türkiye's gas exploration in the Black Sea currently amounts to 710 billion cubic meters: “The use of this volume by all consumers will provide a quarter of the country's total gas consumption, including industries. But despite this, Türkiye will continue to buy gas from other supplier countries, especially Azerbaijan.”

Tanrisever does not think that the volume of Türkiye's gas imports will decrease even after the discovery of this field. On the contrary, he states that if Türkiye becomes a gas hub and gas sales center for Europe, natural gas imports may increase over time: “Black Sea gas is primarily related to the security of natural gas supply and will be an alternative that can easily activate the needs which may arise for various reasons. Thanks to this fuel, Türkiye will be able to easily withstand the possible physical and economic fluctuations and will strengthen its energy security.”
