Energy production from household waste up by over 6% in Azerbaijan

In 2022, Azerbaijan generated 205.3 million kWh of electricity from household waste, 6.3% more than in 2021, Report informs, citing the country’s State Statistics Committee.

According to the committee, over 3.948 million tons of waste were generated in Azerbaijan in 2022, which is 5.4% more than a year earlier. Of these, 66.7% was municipal solid waste, and 33.3% was industrial waste.

Of the 2.658 million tons of municipal solid waste generated last year, 21.2% was used to produce energy.

A total of 337,100 tons of hazardous waste were generated as a result of the production activities of enterprises in 2022, and their share in the total volume of waste was 8.5%. According to the data, 63.1% of the waste was generated in mining industry, most of which generated at the enterprises located in Baku. Some 55,000 tons of hazardous waste were completely neutralized last year, including waste from previous years.
