ABB plans to complete energy stabilization project at Sangachal terminal by February 2027

ABB plans to complete its project to support the electrification and ensure the energy system stability of the Sangachal terminal by February 2027, Report informs, citing the ABB.

“The project is being implemented under a five-year global framework agreement signed with BP in September 2024. Connecting the terminal to Azerbaijan's national power grid will allow for the electrification of the facility, which spans more than 688 hectares — an area equivalent to over 800 football fields,” the statement said.

As part of the project, ABB will supply and integrate four synchronous condensers, specially designed for the site’s requirements, which will enable the decommissioning of the current gas turbines. ABB’s synchronous condensers occupy minimal space while ensuring efficient and reliable operation of the power networks.

“The ABB contract covers the full scope — from initial system studies to detailed engineering, installation, and commissioning. ABB’s electrification and automation solutions will play a key role in ensuring the stability and uninterrupted operation of the Sangachal terminal. Project implementation began in February 2025 and is expected to take around 24 months,” the statement said.

“ABB helps existing energy infrastructure operate more efficiently through automation and more cleanly through electrification, aimed at reducing energy consumption and decarbonization,” said Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB Energy Industries.

Located 55 km south of Baku, the Sangachal terminal is capable of processing 1.2 million barrels of oil and approximately 81 million standard cubic meters of gas per day.
