Vice-president: Lowering water level in Caspian Sea hinders normal operation of SOCAR's production areas

"Emergencies arising as a result of climate changes, as well as increasing fluctuations in the level of the Caspian Sea, confront us with real risks and urge to think seriously about this issue and take preventive measures," Khalik Mammadov, the vice-president of SOCAR, said during his speech at the international conference on "Caspian Sea level fluctuations in climate change, forecasts and adaptation measures", Report informs.

According to him, studying the possible effects of level fluctuations on the ecosystem, conducting serious research regarding it, establishing medium and long-term forecast scenarios, creating an operational official information system for interested parties, preparing adaptation measures, coordination and cooperation at the regional level are particularly essential today.

He noted that the Caspian Sea is a closed basin, and the climatic fluctuations in the basins of the Volga, Ural, Samur, Kura, Terek, Safidrud and other rivers have a significant impact on the rise and fall of the water level here: "Experience shows that when the sea level drops, the area of the shelf zone, where the Caspian fauna lives and develops, decreases, and difficulties emerge in operating hydro-technical facilities, including ports. Similar situations hinder the normal operation of production areas located in SOCAR's offshore facilities."
