Taleh Ziyadov: Despite 1-meter drop in Caspian Sea level over 5 years, it is now stable

The issue of the Caspian Sea’s shallowing is significant not only for a single port or country but also impacts the interests of all five Caspian littoral states, Taleh Ziyadov, Director General of Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC, told Report.

Ziyadov noted that the President of Azerbaijan has repeatedly brought attention to this issue on various international platforms.

“The shallowing of the Caspian basin is a global problem that is seldom discussed internationally, unlike regions such as the Amazon basin. This is a serious challenge that requires a comprehensive approach,” the chairman stated.

He stressed the importance of thoroughly analyzing the causes of the water level decrease to address the problem effectively.

“This could be due to factors like the Volga-Don Canal, the activities of the Kura River, or rising temperatures affecting sea levels. It is crucial to determine whether these changes are related to climate change,” Ziyadov added.

Ziyadov emphasized that although the Caspian Sea’s water level has decreased by 1 meter over the past 5 years, it is currently stable. “We hope that the collaborative efforts of the regional countries will help maintain and even increase the current water level,” he concluded.
