Expert: Endangered species in Azerbaijan increased sharply over past 35 years

Over the past 35 years, the number of endangered fauna species in Azerbaijan has more than doubled, while endangered flora species have grown 3.2 times, according to biodiversity expert Abdin Abbasov, Report informs.

Abbasov shared the figures during a panel discussion titled "Climate and a Sustainable Future: Youth Perspective" at the closing ceremony of the UN Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY Azerbaijan 2025).

Abbasov emphasized the growing negative impact of climate change on biodiversity.

"One of the most distressing examples is the case of white cranes in Azerbaijan-only one individual has been observed in the past 17 years, and it is likely that even that one has disappeared this year," he noted.
