Ecology Ministry responds to Armenia: Azerbaijan interested in protecting environment in its territory

Azerbaijan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources responded to the statement of the Armenian Ministry of Ecology on the construction of a large metallurgical plant.

Advisor to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rasim Sattarzada told Report that Armenia has not fulfilled its obligations in this matter under international agreements.

"The point is not whether the construction of this plant complies with Armenian legislation, but whether it complies with international law. Armenia is a member of the ESPO Convention, which specifically states that in the event of a possible environmental impact on the territory of another country close to any border, discussions and agreements should be held with this country on the procedure for assessing the environmental impact. We are not saying that Armenia is building a plant that does not comply with environmental standards, we are saying that Armenia is not fulfilling its international obligations. That is, if they had provided us with the relevant documents, if we had seen that the operation of this plant was ecologically safe, we would not have said anything," Sattarzada said.
