Armenia did not return to Azerbaijan the bodies of 33 people who were officially registered by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and who died in captivity during the First Karabakh War, Report informs, citing the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons.
Thus, the fate of 54 Azerbaijanis who went missing in the First Karabakh War sparked serious concerns in the Azerbaijani over the past period. According to the information received in 1998-2001, those 54 Azerbaijani citizens who were taken hostage during the first Karabakh war were visited by the ICRC in detention facilities in Armenia and in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan at the time, and they were officially registered by this institution:
"However, later the bodies of 17 of them were handed over to Azerbaijan, and it was not possible to clarify the further fate of 4 people. Although it was reported that 33 people died in detention, their bodies were not returned."
