Opening ceremony of Media Literacy conference kicks off in Baku

The opening ceremony of the Media Literacy conference was organized by the Media Development Agency of Azerbaijan in collaboration with various state and private institutions, academic entities, media, and civil society organizations.

According to Report, the conference, part of Media Literacy Week, was attended by officials from various organizations, local and international experts, and about 500 Azerbaijani volunteers and youth.

In his opening remarks, Ahmad Ismayilov, Executive Director of the Media Development Agency, highlighted that increasing media literacy is a significant and ongoing process that encompasses all segments of society. He stressed the importance of establishing communication between state institutions, the media, and society based on sound principles and effective communication.

In particular, Ismat Sattarov, Chairman of the Audiovisual Council, discussed the ability of media literacy to help individuals find, evaluate, and effectively use the necessary information.

Latifa Akharbach, President of the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA) of the Kingdom of Morocco, noted that the rapid expansion of the electronic information society and easy access to digital information make it challenging for audiences to discern the accurate and reliable aspects of news. She emphasized the importance of enhancing media literacy.

A video clip was then presented, showcasing ideas discussed at the second Shusha Global Media Forum held in July 2024, focusing on disinformation and media literacy.

The event continues with discussions on the technologies and methods used to detect disinformation and identify fake news, one of the most pressing issues of the modern era.

The Media Literacy Week in Azerbaijan runs from December 16 to 22.
