Baku hosts high-level dialogue on climate transparency at initiative of COP29 Presidency

Baku today hosted High-Level Dialogue: Advancing Climate Transparency through Universal Participation in the Enhanced Transparency Framework, Report informs.

The event was organized at the initiative of Azerbaijan as the chairman of COP29.

The purpose of the event was to strengthen global cooperation in the field of climate transparency, to support the formation of an environment of trust between the countries party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to prepare Biennial Transparency Reports (BTR) and to promote the provision of support to countries.

The event was attended by high-level officials from more than 120 countries and international organizations, including ministers and deputy ministers of Türkiye, Uzbekistan, Japan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Kyrgyzstan, the executive secretary of the UNFCCC, the deputy special representative of the US President on climate, chief climate negotiators and other representatives of countries such as Australia, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom, UAE, Saudi Arabia and the European Union.

Mukhtar Babayev, the President-designate of COP29, who made an opening speech, emphasized the importance of cooperation at the global level in the fight against climate change.

He said that the BTRs, which will be presented for the first time this year, play an important role in the objective assessment of the work done in the field of climate change: "These reports will play an important role in fulfilling the obligations of countries under the Paris Agreement, and at the same time, they will further strengthen the activities carried out in the direction of combating climate change and will make a significant contribution to these efforts at the global level".

The Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform (BTP), which will be an important legacy of Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency in the field of climate transparency, was presented at the event.

In his speech, Chief Negotiator of COP29 Yalchin Rafiyev emphasized that the main goal of this platform is to strengthen cooperation on climate transparency at the global level, to form an environment of trust between countries and to support developing countries in the process of preparing BTRs.

At the same time, the platform will contribute to ensuring universal participation by supporting the implementation of the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement.

Within the framework of the event, there was also a presentation of COP29 high-level representatives on climate transparency, who were appointed to further contribute to the global efforts of the COP29 presidency in the field of climate transparency.

Speaking at the event, ministers and deputy ministers, as well as other high-level officials, emphasized the importance of Azerbaijan's contributions to strengthening global efforts in the fight against climate change, increasing transparency, and creating an environment of trust between countries.
