44 anti-tank mines neutralized in Sarijali village

Forty-four anti-tank mines found in the territory of Sarijali village of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district on the last working day of the week have been detonated and neutralized, Khalig Zulfugarov, Operations Manager at the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), told Report.

Zulfugarov stated that additional areas around Sarijali village are currently being cleared for safety purposes:

"In addition to ANAMA's mine search team, mechanical mine clearance equipment and specially trained mine detection dogs are involved in the cleaning activities. This is considered one of the areas most contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance. Anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, as well as various types of unexploded military ammunition are discovered. Forty-four anti-tank mines found in the territory of Sarijali village on the last working day of the week were detonated and neutralized."

Azerbaijan is among the countries most contaminated with landmines in the world. According to initial assessments, Armenia planted 1.5 million mines in Azerbaijani lands during the occupation period.

As a result of demining operations conducted from November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, a total of 200,321 hectares of land in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories have been cleared of mines. Additionally, 196,056 mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) have been detected and neutralized. Of these, 137,422 are UXO, 36,881 are anti-personnel mines (APM), and 21,753 are anti-tank mines (ATM).

From November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, a total of 237 mine incidents were recorded.

From November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, 394 people became mine victims. Of the 394 mine victims, a total of 70 people died, and 324 received injuries of varying degrees. Among the mine victims, 210 were civilians, including 14 minors and young people, and 1 woman; of these, 55 died, and 155 received injuries of varying degrees.

From 1991 to the present day, more than 3,400 people have been recorded as mine victims. Of these, 362 were minors and young people, and 38 were women.
