The international symposium MetbuArt, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the national press, is ongoing in Baku.
According to Report, the symposium, organized on the initiative of the Azerbaijan Publishing House, aims to draw attention to the development path of the Azerbaijani press and to reflect the century-long history of the Azerbaijan publishing house—closely linked to the press—through the language of art.
As part of the event, held under the slogan “Word. Print. Form – Uniting Worlds”, artworks are being created from paper waste, outdated and decommissioned printing equipment, spare parts, and other technical materials.
According to Leyla Gulaliyeva, Director General of the Azerbaijan publishing house, 17 Azerbaijani and 17 foreign artists, photographers, and sculptors are participating in the symposium:
“Other artists are also welcome to present their works or attend the masterclasses. Tomorrow, renowned Azerbaijani photographer Sanan Alasgarov will join the discussions. On July 19, Egyptian artist Mohamed Abouelnaga will hold a session, and on Sunday, open masterclasses will take place. From 11 AM to 5 PM, everyone is welcome to visit the Azerbaijan publishing house and take part in the symposium.”
Turkish participant Aysecan Kurtay, who has worked in the field of plastic arts for 30 years, shared:
“I have a studio in Istanbul. The conditions created for us in Baku are very inspiring. We’re in contact with foreign artists, which motivates us to work even harder.”
Egyptian artist Mohamed Abouelnaga emphasized that participating in such a symposium offers a chance to explore different cultures and traditions and to create new works:
“In the pieces I’m creating here, I try to show the importance and impact of information on the entire world. Information deeply affects people's lives. The wars happening today raise questions for future generations: How will they live in such a world?”
The artist added that he last visited Baku 10 years ago, and this is his second visit to Azerbaijan:
“Baku has become even more beautiful. Compared to 10 years ago, the city has grown much more modern.”
The MetbuArt International Art Symposium, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the national press, will conclude with an open exhibition on July 22.
