UN expert: International freight has huge share in global emissions

The share of international freight transport in global emissions is quite significant, and investments in the sector are needed to reduce them, an economist at the UN Resident Office in Azerbaijan Hurshid Rustamov told a COP29 event titled "Paths to Sustainable Connectivity: CICA and its Member States' Efforts and Regional Organizations of Asia" held in Baku, Report informs.

"According to the International Energy Agency, international freight transport, including air, rail, sea, and road transport, accounts for about 8% of global emissions, and including warehouses and ports - 11%. Among transport modes, road freight transport produces the highest emissions," Rustamov noted.

Rustamov emphasized that special transport policies are needed to increase environmental sustainability, which can significantly improve the efficiency of transport corridors.

He noted the importance of expanding investments in modernizing transport infrastructure and fleet to improve multimodal management capabilities and better integration with rail and road networks.

Rustamov particularly emphasized the importance of transitioning to green energy in freight transport, ports, and logistics terminals to achieve zero emissions in the freight sector.
