The application of unified standards in industrial decarbonization is of great importance at the global scale, Christoph Winterhalter, Vice President for Policy at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), said at an event titled "Advancing Industrial Decarbonization: Harmonization of Carbon Reporting Standards and Definitions for Green Supply Chains" held on the sidelines of COP29, Report informs.
Winterhalter emphasized the importance of standardizing Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reporting in the decarbonization of global supply chains. According to Winterhalter, harmonizing carbon reporting methodologies with unified standards, especially for high-emission industries such as steel and cement, is one of the key factors in achieving the Paris Agreement targets.
"Measuring carbon emissions with unified standards at the global scale is an important step towards supporting public green procurement and increasing transparency in supply chains," he noted.
Winterhalter added that international cooperation and the application of unified standards can accelerate the decarbonization process in the industrial sector. "Joint efforts of industry and governments in this regard will enable achieving sustainable and lasting results in the fight against climate change," the ISO vice president emphasized.
