Campaign rep calls on Norway to stop illegal and state-subsidized whaling

Elisa Phillips, a representative of a campaign against whale hunting, said they were pleased with the conditions created for holding the action at COP29, Report informs.

In her statement to Report, Phillips said the campaign was organized in the green zone against whale hunting activities of the Norwegian government.

"We call on the Norwegian government to listen to more than 800 international scientists who have signed a petition against the start of hydrocarbon production in the seas surrounding the country and to reconsider their plans. We also call on Norway to stop illegal and state-subsidized whaling. Whaling quotas are increasing; this year quotas have increased by more than 15% compared to 2023, and the majority of hunted whale goes to pet food production," said Phillips.

She also called on the international community to support the appeal to the Norwegian government and expressed hope that the Norwegian people would pressure their leaders to protect unique marine ecosystems and stop whaling.
