Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) and the International Union of Railways (UIC) signed a document on railways' climate commitment, Report informs.
The signing took place at an event titled "Connecting Corridors: Rail as a Climate Solution," jointly organized by ADY and UIC within the framework of COP29.
The main discussion topics at the event included Azerbaijan's efforts to increase freight transportation along the East-West and North-South corridors, ADY's growing role in fulfilling obligations arising from nationally determined contributions and the Paris Agreement, and other issues.
ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov reported that 63% of Azerbaijan's railway network is electrified: "Since 2023, ADY has managed to reduce energy consumption by 5%, natural gas consumption by 16%, water consumption by 23%, and carbon emissions by 9%. Last year, 100% of passenger transportation and 80% of freight transportation were powered by electricity."
He noted that ADY's strategy until 2030 focuses on sustainable development with the attraction of green financing.
