The COP29 conference in Baku is an important opportunity to adopt innovative solutions in the field of carbon markets and attract private business to climate action, Ukrainian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Yuriy Husyev wrote in his article "Ukraine's Climate Diplomacy: Priorities for COP29 in Baku," Report informs.

"In the context of global climate change, issues of environmental security and sustainable development are becoming increasingly important. COP29 is an important step towards common solutions. For Ukraine, this summit is of particular importance, as we continue to actively defend the principles of environmental and energy security, which are important components of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Peace Formula," the diplomat noted.

Among Ukraine's priorities at COP29, the ambassador named new climate financial mechanisms (NCQG), international carbon markets and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and strengthening energy security and sustainability.

He also emphasized that Ukraine strives for full implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which regulates international carbon markets.

"COP29 in Baku is an important opportunity to adopt innovative solutions in the field of carbon markets and attract private business to climate action... Ukraine calls for dialogue on energy security issues, which will allow effective progress towards climate neutrality," the diplomat emphasized.

Husyev also reported that this week the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine decided to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

"Creating favorable conditions for the country's recovery will contribute to global climate neutrality... Ukraine seeks to draw attention to the environmental consequences of war, such as ecocide, destruction of infrastructure, pollution of water and soil," the diplomat noted.

Husyev emphasized that Ukraine highly values the strategic partnership with Azerbaijan, which is key to restoring the country's infrastructure and ensuring stability in the region.

"We are especially grateful to Azerbaijan for its constant support of Ukraine in these difficult times, in particular, for humanitarian aid, participation in the restoration of the city of Irpin and readiness to contribute to environmental and energy security processes. This partnership is an important factor for strengthening peace and security in our region. COP29 in Baku will be an important step towards an ecological and safe planet. For Ukraine, this is an opportunity to agree on balanced solutions for a fair and sustainable world," the diplomat concluded.
