FAO official: Modern lifestyle poses threat to plants

Modern lifestyle poses a threat to plants, Muhammad Nasar Hayat, the representative of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Azerbaijan, said at the Plant Health Forum: Towards a Green World in Baku, Report informs.

According to him, the increase in international travel and trade has led to the spread of plant pests and diseases from one country to another: "It is now widely accepted that pests are one of the main factors causing the loss of biodiversity and threatening the delicate web of life that sustains our planet."

He noted that this event will be an important meeting point for national plant health institutes as well as regional and international organizations to focus on protecting plant health, promoting green agricultural practices, and strengthening global food security and biodiversity.

"Plants are the basis of our life," the FAO official added.
