Azerbaijan actively participates in activities of Codex Alimentarius Commission

Azerbaijan has been actively participating in the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in recent years, and this is commendable, deputy chairperson of the commission Betul Vazgecer said in a video address to the conference themed "World Food Safety Day: Science in Action" held in Baku.

Report quotes Vazgecer as saying the commission was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization in 1963 to develop food standards:

"The meetings of the commission, which has 189 members (188 countries and the European Union), are attended by 225 Codex participants (56 international and governmental organizations, 153 NGOs and 16 UN organizations). The main objectives of the commission are to protect consumer health and ensure fair trade in food products, to help coordinate work on food standards by international, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and to initiate and prioritize work on standards development."

Azerbaijan has been a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission since 2011. By the relevant decree of President Ilham Aliyev, the Food Safety Agency was appointed the national coordinating body in the commission.
