A potential 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Greece's Santorini island would be felt in Türkiye with an intensity of magnitude 5, according to Turkish scientists from 9 September University in Istanbul and other universities, Report informs via Habertürk TV.
The experts have prepared a preliminary report on the possible consequences of the natural disaster. They emphasized that if necessary measures are taken, the probability of casualties or material damage from the earthquake is low.
Scientists recalled that there have been volcanic eruptions and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes near Santorini in the Aegean Sea before. They have also caused tsunamis.
There is a possibility of a tsunami wave along the coastal strip between Çanakkale and Mugla provinces. Its height should not exceed two meters, but water could penetrate approximately half a kilometer into Turkish territory.
Local services would be able to detect tsunami formation approximately half an hour before the wave reaches the shore. Additionally, the population will be notified 7-10 minutes before the tsunami begins when there is a real threat.
On February 6, Greece's Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection declared a state of emergency in Santorini due to continuous tremors in recent weeks. The state of emergency will remain in effect until March 1.
