Caspian Sea level may decrease in coming 10-15 years

A decrease in the water level in the Caspian Sea is predicted for at least the coming 10-15 years, Igor Shumakov, head of Russia's Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), said at the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress in St. Petersburg, Report informs via Russian media outlets.

"According to the forecasts based on the models of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global climate change trends will still mean that in the coming 10-15 years, natural environmental changes in the Caspian region will occur against the background of an increase in air temperature, a decrease in river flow and, accordingly, a further decrease in the level of the Caspian Sea," he noted.

According to Shumakov, in recent years, researchers have been recording an increase in the temperature of the water surface of the Caspian and an increase in evaporation. He emphasized the need to adopt a set of adaptation measures during the period of decreasing Caspian Sea levels. Shumakov stressed the importance of proactive efforts by all Caspian littoral states in implementing measures to protect the Caspian.
