UN to create global alliance for South-South cooperation

Civil society plays a key role in advancing cooperation between countries in the Global South, Dima Al-Khatib, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), said in a video address to participants of the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform in Baku, Report informs.

She noted that non-governmental organizations bring global knowledge, trusted networks, and practical innovations, and help transform solutions into tangible results for local communities.

Al-Khatib emphasized that civil society participation enhances the inclusiveness and scalability of joint initiatives, particularly in addressing climate change, reducing inequality, and building urban resilience.

She also announced that, as part of its strategic program for 2026–2029, UNOSSC is establishing a Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

"The Alliance will enhance the coherence, scale, and effectiveness of collaboration. It is a multilateral platform that unites similar initiatives into a single global ecosystem of partners, solutions, and funding," she noted.

According to the head of the department, the new platform will help scale up proven solutions, strengthen mechanisms for interaction between supply and demand, and support the coordination of efforts at the global, regional, and national levels.
