The threat to global security is probably greater now than it was during the Cold War.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said this on Friday at the opening of the Munich Security Conference, Report informs citing TASS.
"The geopolitical divide continues to widen and deepen. This division often paralyzes the UN Security Council and creates conditions for impunity, where states and non-state entities can do what they want. I am often asked if a new cold war has arrived. My answer is that the threat to global security is now more complicated and probably higher than at that time," he said.
“Throughout most of the Cold War, there were mechanisms that allowed opponents to calculate risks and use backup channels for de-escalation. Today, many of these systems are no longer there, and most of those who knew how to use them are no longer with us. Misunderstandings and miscalculations can lead to that a minor incident between powers will spiral out of control, causing incalculable damage," Guterres added.
