Turkey takes over UN General Assembly's chairmanship

Chairman of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir will take office on September 15, Report informs, referring to Anadolu.

The ceremony of handing over the UN General Assembly's chairmanship, which is represented by 194 countries, to Turkey will be held at the organization's headquarters in New York.

The chairman of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Mohammad-Banda Tijani, will hand over the presidency to Volkan Bozkir.

Earlier, 178 countries voted for the Turkish representative's candidacy as leader of the 75th session of the GA.

The mandate of Turkey's first such high-ranking representative to the UN will expire in September 2021.

Every September, delegates of the member states gather in New York to attend the General Assembly. But the 75th session will be different from the previous ones. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 75th session will open on September 22 by video conference.

Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly is the principal deliberative, directive, and representative body of the United Nations.
