Trump, Altman hold discussions on AI

US President Donald Trump held a closed‑door meeting with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman behind the scenes of the Republican Party convention.

According to Report, citing MS NOW TV, the main topic of discussion was artificial intelligence and the rapidly expanding opportunities of technology.

Sources noted that Altman himself requested the meeting.

A few days later, Trump and Altman publicly disagreed over the pace of developing the most powerful AI systems. Altman argued that slowing technological progress could be justified by safety concerns, stressing that competitive pressure should not lead to AI capabilities outpacing control mechanisms.

Trump opposed additional restrictions on the industry, saying that artificial intelligence requires oversight from a "strong and smart president," and warning that increased regulation could drive the sector into "oblivion and bankruptcy."

Earlier, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei suggested that leading AI companies coordinate a slowdown in the development of the most advanced models to gain time for risk assessment. This idea was supported by Altman and entrepreneur Elon Musk.
