Sweden won’t join NATO until at least September

Sweden is unlikely to become a formal NATO member during the Alliance’s July summit in Vilnius. The process may drag on until September, when the Turkish parliament finally ratifies the Swedish application to join the alliance, Report informs referring to TASS.

According to some Turkish politicians in Ankara, after the presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, Turkish MPs are unlikely to discuss the “Swedish” issue before the summer holidays, which usually last from June to September.

After Finland’s accession to NATO, pressure on Türkiye and Hungary from some “very influential” members of the bloc - the US, France, the UK - in order to admit Sweden to the alliance as soon as possible has increased. Norway is also in negotiations at various levels trying to persuade countries that have not yet ratified the Swedish application to do so.
