Spiegel: German Chancellor Scholz faces resignation because of his position on Ukraine

The opposition can take advantage of the position of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and provoke his possible resignation by raising the issue of additional armament of Ukraine in the Bundestag, Report informs referring to Der Spiegel.

The head of the German CDU party, Friedrich Merz, may submit a proposal to the plenary meeting next week on the supply of heavy weapons to Kyiv. This is expected to lead to a clear revision of the positions of all the main political forces of Germany, although earlier the CDU and CSU alliance agreed to unite with Scholz’s main course.

This situation is dangerous for the chancellor, primarily because of his dissatisfaction with his unwillingness to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons: the lack of support may eventually lead to his resignation.

On April 20, German media reported that Berlin had halved the possible export list of weapons for Ukraine, deleting heavy weapons from it. According to Bild, the changes were made “as usual, at the insistence of the chancellor’s office.”

As a result, the list originally submitted by the Ukrainian side was reduced from 48 to 24 pages. Of the 15 types of weapons that Ukraine asked for, three positions remained, including an indication of possible alternatives.
