NATO is initiating a new patrol mission in the Baltic Sea region to ensure the security of infrastructure, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"Today I can announce that NATO is launching the Baltic Sentr mission. This military activity, under the command of NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe Christopher Cavoli, is part of efforts to strengthen presence and maritime surveillance in key areas for our alliance," he said.

According to him, the mission will involve frigates and patrol aircraft, as well as a small fleet of maritime drones. The military will also employ other advanced technologies. Rutte noted that they will also work with NATO allies to integrate their surveillance capabilities with similar alliance assets.

On Tuesday, heads of state and government from NATO countries - Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Sweden, and Estonia - gathered in Helsinki to discuss security issues regarding underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
