Macron opposes creation of migrant return centers in third countries

France does not support the creation of migrant return centers in third countries outside the European Union and will oppose the use of EU budget funds to finance such projects, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a press conference following the EU summit.

According to Report's European bureau, Macron reaffirmed his support for a tougher European policy on illegal migration, including the accelerated processing of asylum applications and the return of individuals who do not have the right to remain in Europe.

At the same time, he criticized the idea of relocating migrants to third countries, calling it ineffective and contrary to Europe"s fundamental principles. The French president also rejected the possibility of financing such projects through the EU budget.

"I will oppose the use of the European Union's budget, especially the budget intended for Europe's international policy, for the construction of return centers," Macron said.

According to him, decisions regarding the establishment of such centers should remain within the competence of individual states if they choose to pursue that policy. However, France does not intend to implement such a model.

Macron also expressed doubts about its practical effectiveness, noting that he is unaware of any successful examples of migrant return centers operating in third countries.
