Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid is demanding an investigation into the circumstances of the fire at a wedding in Nineveh province in the north of the country, which led to numerous casualties, Report informs via TASS.
“We emphasize the need to conduct an investigation to find out all the circumstances of what happened and take all necessary measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” the president said in a post on X. “We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured.”
A wedding was taking place in the banquet hall in Al Hamdaniya, where a fire broke out on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. Al Sumaria TV reports that the bride died, and her body has already been recovered from the rubble.
The Iraqi Ministry of Health has not yet updated information on the dead and wounded: according to the latest official data, as a result of the tragedy, 100 people were killed and another 150 were injured. However, the Iraqi Red Crescent Society reported 450 dead and injured as a result of the fire. According to Al Arabiya TV, 120 people were killed and another 200 were injured.
