Iceland EU referendum: Early results show majority voting against resuming talks

Preliminary results from Iceland's referendum on EU accession show that opponents of European integration are winning a majority, Report informs, citing results from five of the country's six electoral districts broadcast by the RUV TV.

According to the data, 52.5% of voters, or over 99,000 people, voted against resuming accession talks, while 47.5%, or approximately 89,500 Icelanders, voted in favor of joining the bloc. Opponents of the negotiations fear that EU membership would grant other member states fishing rights in the island nation's waters.

Iceland first applied for membership in 2009, but the process was suspended in 2013. The country is already a member of the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area.
