Heavy rains flood city near Madrid

The city of Ávila, located just outside Madrid, has been partially submerged due to flooding caused by weeks of heavy rainfall across Spain.

Report informs via Spanish media that television footage showed flooded neighborhoods in Ávila, a historic city known for its medieval fortifications, situated about 100 kilometers from the Spanish capital. Agricultural lands surrounding the city have also been flooded due to the overflowing Adaja River.

"We are maintaining a state of emergency and heightened alert in the city of Ávila," Mayor Jesús Manuel Sánchez Cabrera said in a broadcast interview.

Authorities are concerned that the melting snow in nearby mountains could exacerbate the flooding, although colder temperatures may delay the worst of the impacts.

As of March 22, fourteen regions in Spain have been issued weather warnings for rain, snowfall, strong winds, and high waves.

The storm "Lorenz," which hit southern Spain earlier this week, has claimed the lives of three people.
