Finland's NATO accession to be discussed at summit in June

Finland's application for NATO membership will be considered at the upcoming summit of the alliance in Madrid in June this year, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said, Report informs, citing TASS.

"A few minutes ago, we learned that the Finnish government is applying for NATO membership, and the issue will be resolved in Madrid," Espaniol quoted the minister as saying.

Finland should apply for NATO membership as soon as possible, according to a joint statement released today by President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin. A formal decision is expected to be made on Sunday, May 15.

NATO will have its next meeting of heads of state and government on June 28-30 in Madrid. Its participants will adopt a new strategic concept and consider strengthening the alliance and the implications of global climate change for the security sector.
