The Finnish authorities plan to allow the US Air Force to use the infrastructure of the Rovaniemi airport following negotiations with Washington on defense cooperation, Report informs referring to Iltalehti newspaper.
This decision was confirmed at the event of the Association of Political Journalists by the President of the Republic, Sauli Niinistö.
He said the agreement to use the airport is part of a plan for a NATO presence in the country.
"The agreement will lead to the fact that there will be at least some US presence in Finland," Niinistö concluded.
In September 2022, the Finnish authorities announced the start of negotiations with the United States - the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA). The final document will determine the status of the US troops in Finland.
