The death toll from monsoon-triggered floods and landslides in Pakistan has risen to 400, TASS said via AFP.
In the last 24 hours alone, 20 people died in the southwestern province of Sindh, including 8 in the regional capital, Karachi. Large parts of the city, home to nearly 15 million people, are underwater, crippling industrial activity, port operations, and public transportation.
The highest number of casualties—over 360—has been reported in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The flooding has completely destroyed 349 homes and damaged around 450 more.
Widespread damage to transportation infrastructure and mobile networks has been reported. Authorities have established 456 temporary shelters for those displaced by the disaster.
A state of emergency remains in effect in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with around 6,000 military personnel and volunteers involved in rescue efforts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has donated his monthly salary to the relief fund, a gesture followed by all cabinet ministers.
Monsoon season in Pakistan typically lasts from June to September, bringing essential rain for agriculture but often causing severe flooding and natural disasters. Forecasters warn that heavy rains are expected to continue until mid-September.
Earlier reports put the death toll at 358.
