Expert: French presidential candidate’s Karabakh trip violates int'l law

French presidential candidate and President of the Regional Council of Ile-de-France Valerie Pecresse will not garner any political dividends from her visit to Armenia, Yevgeny Mikhailov, expert on inter-ethnic conflicts and a member of the Union of Journalists of Russia, told Report.

“In my opinion, she is an impassable candidate for the French presidency and is trying to enlist the support of the large Armenian diaspora in this way. She is indifferent to the official position of the same Paris, which, by the way, sometimes pursues a dual game with regard to Azerbaijan,” the expert added.

The trip of French presidential candidate Valerie Pécresse to Karabakh violates international law, she said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan allowed and will allow such visits, despite attempts to demonstrate the improvement of relations with Ankara and Baku. He added that this is the essence of the Armenian policy - "always wagging its tail in the hope of avoiding the inevitable", namely, the implementation of the signed trilateral agreements.

"In my opinion, in the coming years, one should not expect any decisions from Yerevan in favor of refusal of provocative actions. Armenia will try to play the nonexistent problem of Karabakh until it is cornered by harsh conditions, without which peace is impossible," the expert said.
