ADY: Over 400 block trains expected to move from China to Azerbaijan by end of 2025

In the first half of 2025, 199 block trains were sent from China to Azerbaijan, and more than 400 block trains are expected to be received by the end of the year, according to Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) CJSC, Report informs.

He shared this insight during a meeting with the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Lianyungang Port, Guo Chao Wang, as part of his working visit to China.

During meetings with Wang Feng, Vice President of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), and Wang Qiaolin, the General Manager of CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd.,, Rustamov noted that special importance is given to the renewal and expansion of the locomotive fleet to ensure reliable and safe cargo transportation, and to deepening cooperation with CRRC in this direction, in connection with Azerbaijan's increasing role in the international transport and logistics chain.

The details of the agreement signed in April this year regarding the purchase of seven new locomotives from China, organization of training courses and technical trainings for ADY specialists, technical solutions, production capabilities, and exchange of experience were also discussed.

As part of the meeting with Guo Chao Wang, it was emphasized that ADY's cooperation with this port is of great importance for the development of transport connections between East and West, especially within the Middle Corridor.

It was highlighted that there is currently an increasing dynamic of cargo transportation between China and Azerbaijan. In 2024, 287 block trains were received from China, and during the first 6 months of 2025, this figure has already reached 199 block trains.

By the end of the year, more than 400 block trains are expected to be received. In this sense, attention was drawn to the fact that the organization of regular railway service on the Lianyungang-Baku route is one of the priority directions.

Recently, Baku International Sea Port has been officially integrated into the structure of ADY. This step allows for more efficient coordination of port-railway operations and provides international partners with complex and optimized logistics services. Baku Port plays an important role in ensuring the flow of goods between Asia and Europe. Currently, the port's handling capacity is 15 million tons per year, including 150,000 TEU containers. In the future, the total capacity of the port is expected to be 25 million tons per year, including 500,000 TEU containers.

Guo Chao Wang said that Lianyungang Port exports not only Chinese products but also Japanese and Korean products, which expands the importance of the route and the geography of cargo transportation. He expressed confidence that mutual cooperation will strengthen transport links and make the Lianyungang-Baku route more competitive in the Eurasian space.

During the meeting with Yang Bin, President of China Railway Container Transport Corp. Ltd. (CRCT), the ADY chairman noted the importance of CRCT joining the Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd. joint venture created between the railway organizations of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Georgia for the development of the Middle Corridor.

It was stated that CRCT's active participation in the work of the joint venture will strengthen the region's logistics connections, the role of companies along the Middle Corridor, and increase the efficiency of the route.

The meeting underscored that there is potential to increase cargo volumes along the Middle Corridor. Important issues such as increasing the volume of container transportation in the China-Azerbaijan-China direction and the implementation of digital solutions for logistics optimization, agreeing on an action plan to increase shipments in the second half of 2025, and the integration of port-railway infrastructure were discussed.

The visit of the ADY delegation to China will continue until July 11.
