October 28 marks the World Judo Day

Baku. 28 October. REPORT.AZ/ The International Judo Federation (IJF) celebrates October 28 as World Judo Day each year.

Report informs, the event, takes place on the birthday of the sport's founder Jigoro Kano - October 28.

Today, over 20 million people around the world are engaged in judo. Covering 5 continental unions, the IJF includes 195 national federations.

There is great interest in this kind of sport in Azerbaijan. Nazim Huseynov won the title of Olympic champion in 1992, Elnur Mammadli in 2008. Elkhan Mammadov became the first world champion of Azerbaijan in 2013. Azerbaijani judokas won prizes of international competitions, European championships, European Games. Currently, especially men's national judo team decently represent Azerbaijan in the prestigious competitions.

In 2016, the athletes won medals of Olympics, European championship, Grand Slam, World Masters and Grand Prix.
