German swimmer sets new 400m world record

German athlete Lukas Mertens set a new world record in 400 m freestyle swimming on Saturday, Report informs via Izvestiya.
Mertens set a record at the Stockholm Open with a time of 3 min. 39.96 sec. As a result, the 23-year-old athlete managed to break the record of his compatriot Paul Biderman, which he achieved during the World Championships in Rome in 2009. His result was 3 min. 40.07 sec.
Mertens is the Olympic champion of 2024 and the European champion (2022). He also won a silver and two bronze medals at the World Championships.
