Azercosmos ready for regional and international cooperation in fight against climate change

Azercosmos is ready for close cooperation with regional and international partners to turn common ambitions into real results in the fight against climate change, Dunay Badirkhanov, the acting Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Space Agency (Azercosmos) under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, said at the Space Technology Conference (STC2025) in Baku, Report informs.

"The current session is very important in terms of discussing the role of satellite technologies in combating climate change. Although space is not usually the first solution that comes to mind, it is actually an important tool in fighting climate change. Through space, we can obtain extensive and in-depth information about our climate. Space technologies allow us to see the global picture, track changes, and identify ways to adapt," he said.

Badirkhanov noted that Azercosmos has been presenting a digital platform based on space resources for climate change to the public for two years: "This platform was developed based on the rich archival data of the Azersky satellite and is the first such comprehensive space monitoring system in Azerbaijan in this direction. The platform provides almost real-time information on key indicators such as drought, glacier retreat, sea level changes, methane emissions, and soil salinization. This creates an opportunity for researchers, policymakers, and the public to track climate trends across different regions and time periods."

He added that the Caspian Sea is currently facing serious environmental threats such as decreasing water levels, increasing temperature, and salinity: "Satellite monitoring allows tracking these changes with high precision, which is extremely important for establishing early warning systems and developing science-based policies aimed at protecting sensitive ecosystems like the Caspian."
