In the outgoing year, over 78% of adults in the European Union have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, RIA Novosti quotes European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Report informs.
Vaccination, including a booster dose of vaccine, remains the best way to fight the coronavirus pandemic, she said.
“The increase in the rate of spread of the coronavirus, especially the omicron strain, makes vaccination even more important... We have enough doses so that everyone can be vaccinated and receive a booster dose of vaccine," von der Leyen said.
Until recently, four COVID-19 vaccines have been approved for use in the EU. They are Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. On December 20, the European Medicines Agency, at an extraordinary meeting, recommended Novavax, an American vaccine against coronavirus, for use in the EU. Deliveries of this vaccine will start at the outset of 2022.
